Community Outreach |
|
Outreach is a ministry that responds to the needs of the surrounding community. Below is a listing of the ministries that we support as a church.
RAIN
Regional AIDS Interfaith Network
Our Care Team supports our Care Partners in many ways. We provide transportation to appointments and errands, we lend emotional support, and we make home-cooked meals when they are not feeling well. We enjoy outings as a group to provide a supportive family. We make donations and participate in the annual AIDS Walk.
Toiletry Donations
Community Outreach has found many uses for store-bought toiletries and those from hotels! These has been wrapped in Health Kits and sent to Lutheran World Relief, and from there overseas. We also bring them to the Battered Women's shelter.
Frequently they are donated to Urban Ministries or donated to the homeless men's shelter.
CROP Walk
Cross & Crown's participation in the CROP Walk benefits the hungry near and far. 25% of the money raised by the walk goes toward Loaves & Fishes, Crisis Assistance Ministry, and Second Harvest Food Bank. Money will also go toward helping people of third-world countries grow their own food.
Jody's Place
Lutheran Family Services sponsors a group home for teenage girls who have been removed from their homes. The Jody's Place house was donated by a family formerly from Cross & Crown whose daughter died unexpectedly.
Matthews Help Center
As Cross & Crown's food barrel fills and is emptied, the food is brought to Matthews Help Center. Several of our fund raisers have enabled us to assist the Matthews Help Center's mission. When we help them, they help others in many ways. Food, clothing, utilities, and medical bills are provided to people in need in Matthews. Their food pantry feeds hungry people. They provide transportation to medical appointments and social services. Friendship Trays are meals delivered to the homebound. Nursing services are available 3 mornings weekly. Their busy thrift shop helps them to fund their services.
Squares of Love
A group of women get together and make a difference with thread, scissors, material, and love. Beautiful handmade quilts include 4 corner squares representing the 4 gospels, with a cross in the middle. These lovely quilts are given to provide comfort and warmth to those going through a difficult time.
Operation Christmas Child
Cross and Crown members prepare and donate shoe boxes filled with items for needy children around the world. The church also send a group of volunteers to the Samaritan's Purse warehouse in Charlotte to help process the thousands of shoe boxes sent in from across the U.S.
Family Promise of Charlotte
Cross and Crownis part of a network of churches that house, feed, and support homeless families. We will host them for a week at a time 4 to 5 times a year. There are never more than 5 families or 14 people in the network at a time. The church volunteers prepare meals, serve as evening and Saturday hosts, and as overnight hosts. The network has a director who works with the families in areas of counseling, employment, financial planning, and housing. They also help them to be self suffficient as soon as possible. If you would like more info about this rewarding program, go to www.familypromiseofcharlotte.org.
Angel Tree
The Christmas season includes giving. Each angel taken from our Angel Tree results in a gift to someone who might not otherwise receive one. These gifts are given to the girls at Jody's Place and families in need.
The Homeless Men's Shelter
Winters are colder when you live on the streets. Volunteers come together to prepare and serve a hot meal, providing fellowship and nourishment and satisfying hunger.
